4.0 Printing from Print Preview give a "no printer selected error" – PM V4.0 Build 00000212
Status: Reviewed
Version(s): 4.0

Fact: This issue has been addressed in V4.1 Service Pack 4 and  the V5.0 Release.
Problem: In Version 4.0, when printing a layout from Print Preview, a error message of “no printer selected” is sometimes generated.
Problem: layout has many activities plus a lot of text and activity bars
Problem: printer driver is local
Cause: This is a known issue in V4.0. Issue is caused when printing a very complex layout from Print Preview. Reason is that V4.0 print from Print Preview performs both a print to the printer and a print to preview, which uses too much of the computers system resources and causes a stack overflow, thus the computer no longer knows what the default printer is.

If instead the layout print is not performed from Print Preview, then the issue does not occur since its only printing to the printer and not also to the preview, thus less system resources are used.

Also, if print to network driver from Print Preview, then the issue does not occur since the client PC handles the print to preview and the server handles the printing to the printer.

Fix: Workaround #1 – install the updated PM.EXE 4.0 Build 212 – Release: 4.0 Build 00000212

For the PM.EXE workaround, the PM.INI has to have the following default settings:

[Printer Options]
Yield=On

Fix: Workaround #2 – do not print from Print Preview
Fix: Workaround #3 – print with a network printer driver
